Firefox minimal skin (userChrome.css) and speed-up/ads-filter tricks (further down)

Firefox

Having a small 1024x768 display I have been looking for a browser that wastes minimal space. Internet Explorer 6 was OK,
having the possibility to stack menues, buttons and bars on one line, but then came Internet Explorer 7 :-(   (screenshots here)

So I looked at Firefox, and discovered the userChrome.css file. Here is the latest version for Firefox 42- on Windows 10
The Windows 10 version also fixes the problem with no color in the title bar, and brings back white background to the sidebar:

Installation instructions are further down on the page (after the older versions). Click here to jump there!

If you are still using a Windows version with the Classic Theme you can download userChrome.css for Firefox 29-.
Doesn't look good on Windows 10 due to the huge changes in user interface and themes
. Looks like this on XP with Firefox 29:

If you don't like the new "two-line" URL-bar dropdown you can change to "classic one-line" in the userChrome.css (just change some comments).

If you are still using Firefox 4-28 you can download userChrome.css for Firefox 4-28". Looks like this in classic layout mode on Firefox 4:

Or if you like the new layout without the menubar (it really saves extra space when you have tabs open, just compare the two screenshots):

If you don't like the new "two-line" URL-bar dropdown you can change to "classic one-line" in the userChrome.css (just change some comments).

If you are still using Firefox 2 or 3 you can download userChrome.css for Firefox 2 and 3. Looks like this on Firefox 3:

Now this is how you add the userChrome.css file to your Firefox

  • First, if you don't allready use Firefox, follow this link to read info and download the latest version: Firefox download
  • If you want to use the old layout with buttons, full menu and url-bar and at the top and tabs below (old style) then:
Move all buttons/menus/fields to the "Menu bar", close the "Navigation bar" (skip this if you use the new design).
  • For Firefox 2-28: Change to small icons and make sure the "Stop" and "Reload" buttons are in that order
("Stop" first, to the left of "Reload)". If the buttons are not in that order they will not merge into one button.
  • Then download the right version of userChrome.css for your OS and Firefox version (look in the previous sections).
  • XP and older: Save to: c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile-id>.default\chrome\
  • Newer Windows versions: Save to: c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile-id>.default\chrome\
  • If the bookmarks are not showing in the sidebar (only "Unsorted Bookmarks" at the top) do as follows to expand the bookmarks:
1: Click "Unsorted Bookmarks" (or whatever at the top line), 2: Press "up arrow" (cursor up), 3: Press "right arrow" (cursor right).

  • I have also made a search page that can search with 4 search engines at once. Click on the link to add MultiSearch.
  • If you want to run IE dependant code inside Firefox (without starting Internet Explorer) I recommend the IE Tab 2 extension

  • Speed-up and Ads-filter tricks for Firefox

  • I have made a small compilation of speed-up tricks for Firefox in this user.js file.
  • XP and older: Save to: c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile-id>.default\
  • Newer Windows versions: Save to: c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile-id>.default\
  • If you are tired of all those ads messing up pages and taking bandwidth I recommend the uBlock Origin extension.

  • If you live in Norway you might want to add some extra user-defined filters for norwegian pages to filter more ads.

  • Try the new build-in ads-tracking filter. Removes ads and speeds up page loading!

    First enter the URL "about:config"
to go to Firefox advanced settings.

A warning might appear, but just dismiss that. We know what we are doing :-)

    Enter "tracking" as the search-word.

Right-click on the preference named "privacy.trackingprotection.enabled" and click "Toggle" to change it.

If the preference name is not found you need to update Firefox (it should exist in the newest release version now).

The value should change to "true".

Close the tab to save the changes.

To double-check you can enter the URL "about:config" again, search for "privacy.trackingprotection.enabled", and check that the value is "true".

When a page is filtered a "shield" icon is displayed. Click on it for more info.

If for some reason a page won't work when tracking-protection is enabled it can be disabled for that specific page by clicking on the "Options" button.

But most pages work as normal
    Just loads much much faster!
