Firefox minimal space slim skin (userChrome.css) and speed tweaks (user.js)

Firefox

Having a small 1024x768 display I have been looking for a browser that wastes minimal space. Internet Explorer 6 was OK,
having the possibility to stack menues, buttons and bars on one line, but then came Internet Explorer 7 :-(   (screenshots here)

So I looked at Firefox, and discovered the "userChrome.css" file. Here is the latest version for Firefox 4 and newer (inc Nightly):

Or if you like the new layout without the menubar (it really saves extra space when you have tabs open, just compare the two screenshots):

If you don't like the new "two-line" URL-bar dropdown you can change to "classic one-line" in the userChrome.css (just change some comments).

If you are still using Firefox 2 or 3 you can download the original version of userChrome.css. Looks like this on Firefox 3:

  • First, if you don't allready use Firefox, follow this link to read info and download the latest version: Firefox download
  • If you want to use the old layout with buttons, full menu and url-bar and at the top and tabs below (old style) then:
Move all buttons/menus/fields to the "Menu bar", close the "Navigation bar" (skip this if you use the new design).
  • For both layouts: Change to small icons and make sure the "Stop" and "Reload" buttons are in that order
("Stop" first, to the left of "Reload)". If the buttons are not in that order they will not merge into one button.
  • Then "right-click" this link and "Save link as..." to download the "userChrome.css" for the layout above: userChrome.css
  • Save to: c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile-id>.default\chrome\
  • Then "right-click" this link and "Save link as..." to download the "user.js" file with some speed tweaks: user.js
  • Save to: c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile-id>.default\
  • If the bookmarks are not showing in the sidebar (only "Unsorted Bookmarks" at the top) do as follows to expand the bookmarks:
1: Click "Unsorted Bookmarks" (or whatever at the top line), 2: Press "up arrow" (cursor up), 3: Press "right arrow" (cursor right).

  • I have also made a search page that can search with 4 search engines at once. Click on the link to add MultiSearch
  • If you want to run IE dependant code inside Firefox, without having to use Internet Explorer, I recommend the IE Tab 2 extension
  • If you are tired of all those ads messing up pages and taking bandwidth I recommend the free ads-filter WebWasher
